Apex Locators
Apex locators are electronic instruments that aid in determining the precise location of the root end. Their use helps to minimize the number of x-rays required during treatment.
Ultrasonics
The controlled vibrating action of ultrasonic instruments enables the endodontist to remove posts and other obstructions in root canals. These instruments are also used to prepare the apices for filling during endodontic surgery.
Digital Radiography
Digital imaging has only recently become widely used in dentistry. Each of our operatories is equipped with intraoral sensors to utilize this technology. Digital radiography can reduce radiation exposure up to 90% when compared with traditional dental radiographs.
BioPure MTAD root canal cleanser
Our office has a new root canal irrigant called BioPure MTAD. Irrigants are used during root canal therapy to remove debris and kill bacteria in the cleaning and shaping process. New research has shown a type of bacteria, E. faecalis, can be resistant to conventional irrigants like sodium hypochlorite and may survive the cleaning and shaping process. In particular, this bacteria has been linked to cases of root canal therapy failure. MTAD is a new root canal cleanser that combines a surfactant, an acid, and a broad spectrum antibiotic (doxycycline) to remove the smear layer in an instrumented root canal and also kill bacteria by preventing growth and proliferation.
Resilon root canal filling material
During root canal therapy the canals inside each root are cleaned and filled. The filling material provides a seal at the end of the root (the apex) to prevent infection outside the tooth. We have Resilon, marketed under the brand names Epiphany and Realseal, which is a polymer that physically bonds to the dentin structure of the tooth. This bonding can prevent root canal recontamination if the canal system becomes exposed to saliva. Studies have also shown this bonded filling increases the strength of the tooth when compared to conventional filling materials.
